PLEASE NOTE:
You MAY EXPERIENCE SKIN PURGING–
When you transition from chemical-heavy face products to all-natural ones, your skin may undergo a process known as “skin purging.” This can be a bit disconcerting, but it’s typically a temporary phase as your skin adjusts to the new products. Here’s how it generally works:
Removal of Buildup: Chemical-heavy products often contain ingredients like synthetic fragrances, silicones, and certain preservatives that can build up in your pores over time. When you switch to all-natural products, these ingredients are no longer being applied, allowing your skin to begin shedding the accumulated buildup.
Acceleration of Cell Turnover: Natural products, particularly those with ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids AHAs or beta-hydroxy acids BHAs derived from fruits, plants, or other natural sources, can speed up your skin’s natural exfoliation process. This acceleration can lead to the shedding of dead skin cells more rapidly than usual, which may cause some initial flakiness or peeling.
Deep Cleansing: Natural products often have gentle yet effective cleansing properties. They can penetrate deep into the pores to remove impurities and excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural oils. This deep cleansing action can bring underlying congestion to the surface, leading to temporary breakouts or blemishes.
Adjustment Period: As your skin adapts to the new products, it may go through a period of adjustment. This adjustment phase can vary in duration but typically lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. During this time, you may experience increased breakouts, dryness, or oiliness as your skin balances itself out.
Long-Term Benefits: While skin purging can be frustrating, it’s often a sign that your skin is detoxifying and renewing itself. Once your skin has fully adjusted to the new products, you’re likely to see improvements in overall clarity, texture, and radiance. Additionally, natural products tend to be gentler on the skin and less likely to cause irritation or sensitivity in the long run.
It’s important to note that not everyone will experience skin purging when switching to natural products, and the severity and duration can vary depending on individual skin types and the specific products being used. If you’re concerned about any reactions or changes in your skin, it’s always a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice and recommendations.
Grass-Fed Tallow: Tallow is rendered animal fat, often sourced from cows. Grass-fed tallow specifically comes from cows that have been raised on a grass-fed diet. It is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as essential fatty acids. Tallow is highly moisturizing and helps to nourish and protect the skin barrier. It can also have anti-inflammatory properties and is suitable for all skin types.
Rosehip Oil: Rosehip oil is extracted from the seeds of rose bushes. It is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as essential fatty acids. Rosehip oil is known for its ability to hydrate and moisturize the skin, improve skin tone and texture, reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines, and protect against environmental damage. It is particularly beneficial for dry, aging, or sensitive skin.
Carrot Seed Oil: Carrot seed oil is derived from the seeds of the carrot plant. It is high in antioxidants, vitamins A and E, and beta-carotene. Carrot seed oil has rejuvenating and revitalizing properties for the skin. It can help to improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, and promote a more youthful complexion. It is also beneficial for soothing irritated or inflamed skin.
Pumpkin Seed Oil: Pumpkin seed oil is extracted from pumpkin seeds and is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as zinc and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. It has moisturizing and nourishing properties for the skin and can help to soothe and calm irritated or sensitive skin. Pumpkin seed oil also contains antioxidants, which can protect against environmental damage and promote healthy, radiant skin.
Lavender Hydrosol: Lavender hydrosol is the floral water that remains after essential oil is extracted from lavender flowers through steam distillation. It has a soothing and calming effect on the skin, making it ideal for sensitive or irritated skin. Lavender hydrosol also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce redness and inflammation and promote healing. It has a gentle aroma that can also help to relax the mind and body.
Coconut Oil : coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has antibacterial properties. This can help to cleanse the skin and remove bacteria, dirt, and impurities, making coconut oil a good choice for acne-prone or blemish-prone skin.
Antioxidant Protection: Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin E, which help to protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors like pollution and UV radiation. This can help to prevent premature aging and keep the skin looking youthful and radian
Combining these ingredients in a skincare product, such as a face wash, can provide a range of benefits including hydration, nourishment, antioxidant protection, soothing properties, and overall improvement in skin health and appearance.
The Importance of INCI Transparency and Preservatives in Skincare
In the realm of DIY skincare, a lack of transparency in ingredient labeling can lead to confusion among consumers. One common example is the use of terms like “Emusifying wax” instead of the correct INCI Cetearyl alcohol and Polysorbate 60 on product labels. This discrepancy, although seemingly minor, can mislead customers and compromise their understanding of the products they use.
Clarity in INCI labeling:
The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients INCI provides a standardized way to label cosmetic ingredients. Unfortunately, some DIY skincare creators do not consistently adhere to these guidelines. For instance, the presence of emulsifying wax, a plant-derived ingredient often accompanied by Polysorbate, may be listed under the generic term “Emusifying wax.” It is crucial to educate customers on the correct nomenclature to foster transparency in skincare choices.
Importance of emulsions in skincare:
Emulsions, such as lotions, face creams, and hair conditioners, play a vital role in skincare routines. They enable the mixing of water and oil, combining the nourishing benefits of oils and butters with the hydration provided by water. Without this blend, skincare routines risk becoming one-dimensional, akin to quenching thirst with a glass of oil. While oils and butters contribute to skin health and moisture, hydration is equally essential for achieving optimal skin balance.
Preservatives: A necessary safeguard:
Despite the negative connotations surrounding preservatives, their importance cannot be overstated. Natural and well-known preservatives are crucial for preventing mold growth and inhibiting harmful bacteria in skincare products. While some may shy away from preservatives, envision a scenario where a lotion devoid of them would last a mere seven days – an impractical timeline for consumers.
Conclusion:
In the pursuit of complete transparency and customer education, it is imperative for DIY skincare makers to accurately label their products using INCI guidelines. Embracing the correct terminology and informing customers about the significance of emulsions and preservatives ensures that they make informed decisions for their skincare health. Let’s debunk the myths surrounding preservatives and emphasize their crucial role in maintaining product integrity and safeguarding consumer well-being

WHAT IS ECOCERT?
ECOCERT, founded in France in the early 1990s, is now the world’s leading certification for organic farming, natural & organic cosmetics, textiles, food quality and safety, fair-trade, forestry practices, and home-use products. The philosophy behind ECOCERT’s establishment was to become the driving force behind sustainable economic growth that values our environment and natural resources, work towards healthier alternatives and solutions, as well as set the international standards required to unite global efforts in sustainable development.
ECOCERT Greenlife, a subsidiary of ECOCERT, is responsible for approving and certifying non-food products, including natural or organic cosmetics and raw materials. Established in 2009, it supports cosmetic companies that seek to join this revolutionary movement towards safer, more socially responsible, and planet-friendly long-term solutions.
WHAT IS THE COSMOS STANDARD?
COSMOS stands for “COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard”.
The COSMOS standard was implemented in 2010 by five European organizations: BDIH Germany, Cosmebio France, ECOCERT Greenlife France, Soil Association Certification UK, and ICEA Italy. The primary purpose of COSMOS is to align quality and sustainability standards across the international cosmetics sector to benefit all stakeholders, ensure transparency, and drive forth innovation.
COSMOS strives to achieve the following overarching goals:
Encourage the use of organic ingredients, products, and practices.
Protect biodiversity, the environment, and the earth’s natural resources.
Establish manufacturing and operational processes that minimize risks to human health.
Advance the principles of ‘green chemistry’ to reduce the use of hazardous elements and practices.
The four main certification signatures offered by COSMOS are:
COSMOS ORGANIC – for cosmetic products that are certified under the COSMOS standard must meet the stated percentage of organic ingredients.
COSMOS NATURAL – for cosmetic products that are certified under the COSMOS standard no minimum percentage of organic ingredients.
COSMOS CERTIFIED – for cosmetic ingredients or raw materials with organic content adhering to the COSMOS-standard.
COSMOS APPROVED – for cosmetic ingredients or raw materials with no organic content that are approved for products adhering to the COSMOS-standard.
The procedure for certification involves gaining initial approval of the product specification by an authorized certification body, followed by the approval of the planned product label design. After successful approval, the product can be launched with the appropriate COSMOS labelling and signature.
